Sanity System

What is Sanity

Sanity system is the most significant element of COC. It defines the mental state of the investigator through the whole game. The started value of Sanity points (SAN) is equal to the point of POW, and the points should be tracked carefully as the number can change up and down throughout the game.

SAN Check

When investigators encounter a sanity-threatening situation, the Keeper may call for a Sanity roll. Each player whose investigator experiences this source of horror rolls 1D100. A success is a roll equal to or less than the investigator’s current Sanity points. Bonus dice and penalty dice are not applied to Sanity rolls

A successful roll means that the investigator loses no Sanity points, or only a minimal amount. A failed Sanity roll always means the investigator loses Sanity points. The amount lost depends on the spell, book, entity, or situation encountered.
Here some example for the SAN loses (successful roll/fail roll):

  • 0/1D2 Found torn animal carcasses
  • 0/1D3 Found part of a body
  • 0/1D4 saw blood flowing all over the ground
  • 1/1D4+1 Found a bloody and horrible corpse
  • 0/1D6 Wake up and find yourself trapped in a coffin
  • 0/1D6 Witness the death of a friend by violence act
  • 0/1D6 See a ghoul
  • 1/1D6+1 Encounter with a person you know to be dead
  • 0/1D10 tortured
  • 1/1D10 Seeing a dead body resurrected
  • 2/2D10+1 Witness corpses raining down from the sky
  • 1D10/1D100 Look directly at the great Cthulhu

Insanity

Because of the lose of SAN, insanity may happen on player:

  • Temporary Insanity: losing ≥5 SAN at once
  • Indefinite Insanity: losing ≥⅕ SAN in one game day
  • Permanent Insanity: SAN equal to 0

These insanities may bring various Bouts of Madness on PC, Permanent Insanity even turn your investigator to lose player control!
